My Harry Potter experience at the real life Hogwarts (UK Road Trip #3)

So we weren’t very lucky at getting to see the other castles properly during the first days of our trip, but Alnwick Castle is the one I definitely wasn’t going to miss. It’s the location where the first and second Harry Potter films were shot – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (1), Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2). Alright, so the cat’s out of the bag. I’m a Harry Potter nerd. If you are too, you’d love this place (and a few other places I visited during this road trip … shhh! I’ll share more later) so keep an eye out for future posts for more Harry Potter related greatness.

Out of all the Harry Potter film locations, I think Alnwick Castle is the most magical because (drum roll please…..) It’s the setting of the real-life Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Yup, Hogwarts actually exists! Okay not exactly, but once you step into Alnwick Castle, it certainly feels like it does.

I highly recommend joining in the tour of the castle. The tour guides were very knowledgeable about the history of the castle as well as knowing exactly where each and every Harry Potter scene took place. Trust me, after visiting you won’t be able to watch a Harry Potter film without pointing out “I was there and there and there!” much to the annoyance of your loved ones.

Here’s one little highlight of the tour. This is a photo of the Courtyard of the castle, which is actually where Harry, Ron and Hermione first met. This is also where Ron made Hermione run off crying when she overheard Ron tell Harry she’s annoying. (Damn you Weasley!) We even had some of the tour guides act out the scene for us, which was a great laugh!

Broomstick training

Broomstick training is a must if you want to relive some of that Harry Potter magic! And don’t worry, it’s not just for kids. You’ll find people of all of ages joining in the fun.

Now when I first saw pictures of Broomstick Training on the Alnwick Castle website, it really puzzled me. How did they manage to get pictures of people “flying” on broomsticks? What is this new gravity defying cleaning product? That is until I actually took part, I then discovered how they released the “magic in us” to help us fly. If you really want to know how, I just dare you to try it out for yourself. You’ll have a magically-delicious fun time!

Are you a Harry Potter nerd? If not, what’s wrong with you? (I  joke, I  joke)
